About Ready for School

This programme is  funded by Arts Council England, Youth Music and East Sussex Music Education Hub.  We have commissioned East Sussex Music to carry out the work.

Using music workshops to develop speech and language in rising 5s we have worked with musicians, teachers and parents to produce some incredible results.

You can read the evaluation report and watch a short film here.

The first phase was for children in their pre-school setting.  Each week our team delivered workshops of songs, rhymes, movement and stories helping the children to develop not only musical skills but also in speech, language and communication to aid their transition to school.

The first phase ran for 15 weeks in terms 4, 5 & 6 of the school year (March to July).  The second phase ran for another 15 weekly sessions with the children and the rest of their Reception classes in terms 1, 2 & 3 of the following school year (September to February).

The workshops are designed for around 12 to 15 children selected by six nurseries/schools who they believe will benefit from the musical, communication and transition focuses of the workshops.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the first phase. Families can access some of the song tracks by clicking this link or the picture above.  Each family was also be given a songbook and CD with the songs and tips for enjoying them at home.
